Aiding Students of Biology

Bachelor of Sciences/Doctor of Medicine (BS/MD) Program: Through a linkage with Meharry Medical College, students at Tennessee State University majoring in the biological sciences or chemistry are invited to participate in the Summer Enrichment [BS/MD] Program at Meharry Medical College. Tennessee State University students are selected by the TSU BS/MD Site Coordinator based on the students' GPA and the Coordinator's personal knowledge of the students. Students must also be deemed to possess the potential to succeed in the program that results in conditional acceptance into Meharry's School of Medicine. Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program: The MARC Honors Undergraduate Research Training Program has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since June 1, 1980. The objective of the program is to increase the number of well-prepared minority students who can compete successfully for entry into graduate programs leading to the Ph.D. degree in the biomedical sciences. Minority Biomedical Research Support - Support of Continuous Research Excellence (MBRS/SCORE): The MBRS-SCORE program has received continuous funding since 1973 from National Institutes of Health, the National Institute General Medical Sciences. The primary goals of the program are to increase the number of minority scientists in biomedical research and to enhance the infrastructure which supports biomedical research at institutions that serve large numbers of minority students. Project Tiger Teach (PTT): The TSU PTT program is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program that seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. It provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and academic programs for undergraduate STEM majors and post-baccalaureate students holding STEM degrees who earn a teaching credential and commit to teaching in high-need K-12 school districts. TSU-NERVE Program: The TSU-NERVE program is a research training program for rising juniors majoring in Biology, Chemistry or Psychology. Eligible students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or greater, earning/have earned a grade of B or better in General Biology I, General Biology II, General Psychology, General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II, Elementary Statistics or equivalent, Physics I, Physics II; provide 2 professional references and submit a personal statement of academic and professional goals. SUMMER PROGRAMS

By affiliation agreement with the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, a wide range of marine biology courses may be taken for resident credit by Departmental majors. In addition, the department maintains a listing of available summer research and training programs in the MARC program office.
