دوباتن در کتاب خود هشت ویژگی برای سفر رفتن برمیشمرد و در هر بخش با محوریت قرار دادن یک هنرمند، شاعر و نویسنده و همچنین یک مکان جغرافیایی خاص در مورد ویژگی مور نظر خود سخن میگوید
مثلا در بخش هفتم که 'در باب هنر دیدهگشا' نام دارد با راهنمایی ونسان ونگوگ به پرووانس سفر میکند.

A digressive, funny, philosophical late-18th-century work told by a man confined to his room: though he interacts occasionally with his manservant and his dog, one could argue that the narrator’s Soul (an entity he refers to as ‘she’) and Animal natures are the biggest presences in the room. The debt to Laurence Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is obvious, even without the narrator’s mention of Uncle Toby.

Okuduğum en enteresan kitaplardan birisiydi. Sanırım bir süre sonra tekrar okumam lazım. Beğenmedim diyemem ama beğendim hiç diyemem, puan verirken bile zorlandım açıkçası.
Yazar eserde ruh ve bedeni ayırıyor, 42 günlük hapis hayatında fiziksel olarak odada olmasına rağmen ruhunun yaptığı seyahatleri anlatıyor.
Dediğim gibi biraz tarzı faklı, ben şahsen daha dolu bir eser bekledim ama çok da bulamadım sanırım beklediğimi.

'Voyage Around My Room' is the perfect book to read when in bed with a cold. In another life, I would like to list my favorite books to read in bed while sick. This would be in the top ten for sure. The author, Xavier de Maistre, was busted for dueling and sentenced to house arrest for 42 days. What came out of that self-imprisonment is this book. کتاب راجع به شخصی بود که به خاطر کشتن فردی (افسری) در دوئل به چهل و دو روز محبوس بودن در اتاق جریمه میشه.
از فلسفه ای داره میگه از خاطراتش از دیدش به هنر به زندگی معتقده به تخیل و شیوه ای که یاد میده دیگه نمیخوای کلی راه بري تا ایتالیا یا فرانسه رو ببینی این راه کم هزینه ست و بدون خستگی!، راجع به همه اش در چهل و دو فصل نوشته شده. کم حجم جالب بود. میگفت هیچ تابلویی به اندازه آیینه برای همه خوب نیست هم آقایون راضی میشن هم بانوان.

Utterly delightful, and exactly what it says it is. This is the kind of book that someone might write today, but lard it so heavily with reflections on how they're not writing fiction, but doing something like totally revolutionary that it would become tedious instead of astonishingly pleasant. Just holding this makes me smile, in memory the smiles I smiled as I read it.

I was introduced to this book through reading de Botton's Art of travel, de Botton has also written the foreword so it links well. This is such a random book I was astonished to find it in a normal bookshop, but I did, and the rest is history. The reason why this book is so good is due to the importance of the central idea, this idea is self evident from the title.

افسری به خاطر دوئل چهلودو روز در اتاقش حبس شده و حاصل این چهلودو روز رو در چهلودو فصل کوتاه نوشته. اسم کتاب برام جالب بود و نیمهٔ اول کتاب خیلی برام خوشایند بود ولی از نیمه دوم خسته شدم. لحن طنزآمیز کتاب خستم کرد در واقع. راوی داستان بیشتر از سفر به دور اتاقش، در مورد خاطرات و پرواز روحش صحبت میکنه و حس کردم دچار مالیخولیا شده و میخواد من رو هم وارد دنیاش کنه.
طنزش من رو یاد مرگ براس کوباس انداخت و شاید چون مقایسه میکردم، نتونستم این کتاب رو خیلی دوست داشته باشم. ( مرگ براس کوباس عالیه)

Özellikle ilk 20-30 sayfada beni hiç ama hiç çekmedi içine kitap. Bir cümle ya da paragraf okuyup hiçbir anlam veremediğim oldu, belki çevirinin de payı vardır bilemiyorum. Kısa, farklı ve hoş bir kitap diye düşünerek almıştım ama sonuç olarak yarına bile kalmasın diye bitirip kenara koyuyorum.
